A WORD OF WELCOME |
Hello. I thank you for visiting my home page. I am a newly-minted Doctor of Philosophy in Space Physics. I earned my Ph.D. from the Department of Physics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks . My dissertation research concerned a mechanism for current sheet thinning in the late growth phase of magnetospheric substorms. (Interested persons can find more information here .) I was also a graduate research assistant in the Space Physics and Aeronomy Group of the Geophysical Institute . My dissertation advisor was Dr. Antonius Otto. I received my Ph.D. in Space Physics on Sunday, 14 May 2006 (Mother's Day). I plan to seek post-doctoral research positions and/or visiting professor positions that will allow me to continue my professional development. Eventually I plan to seek a tenure-track faculty position at a college or university that will allow me to maintain a suitable balance of teaching, research, and public outreach activities. |
PRIOR EDUCATION |
I moved to Alaska to continue my graduate studies, which I
had begun in the Department of Astrophysical, Planetary, and
Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Colorado at
Boulder. [That department has since re-organized, with some of my
former professors now in the Department of Astrophysical and
Planetary Sciences, while others are now in the Department of Physics. (Many
of my plasma physics professors had already had joint appointments
with the Department of Physics when I was there.)] I earned my Master
of Science in plasma physics in 1995. My advisor in Colorado was Dr. Ellen Gould
Zweibel. She has since relocated to the University of Wisconsin at
Madison, where she is a Professor of Astronomy and Physics in the
Astronomy Department. (Those
who visit Dr. Zweibel's home page will find that I adapted the format
of that page for my purposes in creating this page.)
I began my college career in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Ohio University . I earned a Bachelor of Science in physics with a concentration in astronomy from the Honors Tutorial College in 1991. My advisor there was Dr. David S. Onley.
