Here are some basic pictures of myself. I'll start with a
picture that was taken of me just outside the Natural Science Facility
(in which the Department of Physics is located) on the University of
Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) campus. I had been riding my bike; I am
holding my bike helmet in my hands. If memory serves, the picture
was taken by Irene Downes, who was the Administrative Assistant of the
Physics Department at that time.
Here is a picture of me with the Geophysical Institute, wherein my
office is located, in the background. I believe that my father
may have taken this picture of me.
Here is a picture of me in front of the sign just outside the
entrance of the Geophysical Institute. (You can see it in the
lower left of the picture above.) This picture was taken by Barry
Miller for an article on my "geeksta rap" for an internal Geophysical
Institute publication.
Here is a picture of me at my (admittedly somewhat messy) desk.
My
Stints as Tuvok
Friends of mine had noted, as had I, some
degree of similarity between my physical appearance and manner and
those of Lieutenant Commander Tuvok of Star Trek: Voyager. At some
point I decided to take advantage of that similarity; and so I
purchased a Star Trek costume. I wore it on a couple of
Halloweens. As I recall, a fair number of people rather quickly
recognized my costume. I would be remiss if I did not give due
credit to my barber Charlette, who affixed tips to my ears and attended
to my make-up.
I have been fortunate that some of my friends were able to join me
in this geeky fun. One year a group of us went to the Blue Loon,
a Fairbanks establishment, for Halloween. I was, of course,
dressed as Tuvok. Karen was dressed as a Romulan. Fernanda
dressed as Seven of Nine. Jeffrey dressed as an Andorian.
And Donnie and James dressed as "Red Shirts" from the Original
Series. We met a couple of fellows dressed as Klingons once we
reached the Blue Loon. We did not win the costume contest; but
our efforts were appreciated. I remember one fellow telling me of
the effect on his mind of seeing Tuvok dance to "Baby Got Back" by Sir
Mix-a-Lot. I can appreciate the associated challenge.
For a few years, my friend Debi had asked me to join her at a party
held by her church on Mardi Gras. I deferred year after year,
arguing that I should attend to my work. (I should note that Debi
does a rather good job of posing as Captain Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager.) But I
finally did agree to her request at one of my few opportunities to do
so before leaving Fairbanks. I will leave you with a few of the
pictures from that day.
Here is a picture of Debi and me in costume. This picture was
taken in Charlette's barbershop.
Here is a picture of me and Charlette---again, in her barbershop.
For those who are not familar with Star Trek: Voyager, I provide you
with this picture of the "actual" Tuvok (played by Tim Russ) and
Janeway (played by Kate Mulgrew).
